A video of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has gone viral on social media, shocking many people. In the video, the CM is seen distributing appointment letters to newly appointed AYUSH doctors at a function in Patna. During the event, a Muslim woman wearing a burqa comes on stage to receive her appointment letter.
In the video, Nitish Kumar first asks the woman to lower her burqa. Moments later, he himself pulls the burqa away from her face while handing over the appointment letter. The woman appears visibly surprised for a few seconds and seems confused about what just happened. Several leaders and officials standing on the stage are seen smiling, and after a brief moment, the woman also smiles. However, the video has triggered strong reactions on social media.
Many social media users and opposition leaders have criticised the Chief Minister’s behaviour, calling it inappropriate and disrespectful. The incident has led to a flood of comments, with people raising concerns about dignity, consent, and sensitivity.
CPI(ML)-Liberation leader Divya Gautam, who was the Mahagathbandhan candidate from Digha Assembly constituency in Patna, strongly criticised Nitish Kumar over the incident. She said that such behaviour by a constitutional authority is unacceptable and reflects insensitivity towards Muslim women. Divya Gautam stated that respect for personal choice, religious identity, and women’s dignity should never be compromised, especially on a public platform.
Divya Gautam also led a protest related to justice and minority rights. Along with other leaders, she protested at Buddha Smriti Park in Patna, demanding strict punishment in the Nawada mob lynching case. In this incident, 35-year-old Atahar Hussain was allegedly attacked after being asked his name and religion. He later died during treatment. Police have arrested eight accused so far, and investigations are ongoing.
Linking both issues, Divya Gautam said that the burqa controversy and the Nawada mob lynching reflect a disturbing pattern of intolerance and misuse of power. She demanded accountability from the government and urged people to uphold constitutional values, equality, and justice.
