NEET Aspirant’s Suspicious Death Sparks Demand for Safety Audit of Hostels in Patn

Neet Girl Death:  The suspicious death of a NEET aspirant girl in Patna has triggered widespread outrage, with parents, students, and civil society groups demanding a comprehensive safety audit of all hostels in the city.

Initially, police denied any foul play in the case. However, after the postmortem report surfaced, the police appeared to step back from their earlier stand. The report stated that sexual abuse cannot be ruled out, raising serious questions about the initial investigation and hostel safety standards.

Patna is a major education hub, where lakhs of parents send their children each year to prepare for medical and engineering entrance examinations, hoping for a better future. Areas such as Boring Road and nearby localities house hundreds of hostels, accommodating thousands of students. These hostels collectively generate significant business and employment in the city, yet basic safety measures and regulatory oversight remain largely absent.

According to local residents and activists, many hostels operate without proper registration, safety clearance, or No Objection Certificates (NOC). Allegations have also emerged that individuals with criminal backgrounds are running several hostels, putting students—especially girls—at serious risk.

Speaking on the issue, Veena Manvi, patron of Mahila Vikas Manch, expressed deep concern over the safety of girls in Patna.

“Patna girls are not safe. How can they feel secure when the government has no concrete plan to ensure their safety? Many hostels are involved in illegal activities, and in several cases, their owners have criminal backgrounds,” she said.

Manvi, who regularly counsels women facing harassment, domestic violence, and other forms of abuse, emphasized the need for awareness among young girls coming to Patna for studies.

“We try to counsel newly arrived girls. They should stay focused on their careers and remain cautious. They must avoid being lured by expensive gifts, money, or glamour,” she added.

Following the incident, public anger has intensified, with growing calls for mandatory registration, safety audits, CCTV installation, background verification of hostel owners, and strict monitoring by authorities. Many believe that without immediate and strict action, the trust of parents and students in Patna as an educational hub could be seriously shaken.
